Glitches is a novella in The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, as well as the very first novella to be released in the series. Said novella features a much younger and naive Cinder and takes place in New Beijing, Eastern Commonwealth. It takes place approximately five years prior to the start of Cinder and was released on January 18, 2012 by Tor Books.

Synopsis[]

Linh Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister, Peony's illness. In Glitches, a short prequel story to Cinder, we see the results of that illness play out, and the emotional toll that takes on Cinder. Something that may, or may not, be a glitch . . .

Plot[]

The story opens to an uncertain Cinder sitting next to Linh Garan, her new legal guardian, on a train ride. A young and orphaned Cinder has just been recently operated on and shipped off to the Commonwealth in an attempt to not only adjust to her new life, but to provide a safehaven from her aunt, the very Lunar queen who threatens her existence.

And though Cinder is met with a caring family at first, she can't help but feel the fake hospitality that lingers in their gazes. That is, except for Peony, her youngest stepsister with a heart of gold and a knack for playing dress-up. It's through her that she comes to learn of the dismantled servant droid that the family had all but abandoned. In a bid to prove her worth to her new adoptive family, she successfully repairs Iko.

However, Garan reveals that he's caught letumosis, the deadly plague that's been ravaging Earth in recent years. With no chance of survival, Cinder can't help but feel at a loss of words at what was practically a death sentence. And although no tears come, she suspects she has a glitch.
