"This woman was full of so much ignorance it was almost like she wanted to stay that way. She saw what she wanted, believed anything to support her limited view of the world."
Cinder on Adri's narrow-mindedness in Winter

Linh Adri is Linh Cinder's cruel adoptive mother, the mother of Linh Pearl and Peony, and widow of Linh Garan.

History[]

Adopting Cinder[]

Adri had became Cinder's adoptive mother unwillingly, as she had never agreed with her husband, Garan, on taking the cyborg in as their ward. She then blamed Cinder for Garan's death, as he had died from Letumosis not long after his return from Europe, where he had adopted her. As Garan was taken to the plague quarantine, she cried out that he couldn't leave her with "this thing." Since then, she had treated both Cinder and their servant android, Iko, very cruelly.

Unbeknownst to Adri, the reason her husband felt "obligated" to go to Europe "of all places" in order to "find some mutant to take care of" was because Cinder was the lost, thought-to-be-dead, Lunar heir, Princess Selene.

Adri referred to her actions as "generous," but did not treat Cinder/Selene well, forcing her to work in New Beijing Market every day to pay off the family bills while she, herself, never worked. Adri never bought Cinder a new limb, even though her foot was was the size of an eleven-year-old, which is the same as wearing shoes the size for eleven-year-olds, when Cinder herself was already sixteen.

Recent Events[]

In Cinder, Adri's youngest daughter, Peony, was discovered to have Letumosis after she, Cinder, and Iko returned from the Taihang District Junkyard. Adri blamed Cinder for her daughter's illness because, she thought, that even though Cinder didn't have the plague, she must have passed it from Chang Sacha, the baker who had caught the disease while Cinder was at the market, to Peony. In anger and desperation to save her daughter, Adri volunteers Cinder for plague research, while it was a known fact that no one survived.

After Peony died, Adri later took away Cinder's new foot — a-not-so-inexpensive foot that Iko had found when Cinder needed a new one she already had was too small for her — forcing Cinder to go to the marketplace with only one foot and crutches, after believing that Cinder was trying to run away when really, she was trying to save Peony but had been too late.

In Scarlet, she and Pearl meet Emperor Kaito over Cinder's possible whereabouts. That is when she tries to convince him that Cinder is just a heartless machine, revealing that she can't cry as well as her stealing Peony's ID chip, saying that she was jealous of her.

In Cress, she and Pearl received 80,000 univs and two tickets to Emperor Kai and Queen Levana's wedding for selling out Cinder. To kidnap Kai, Cinder glamoured herself and tricked Adri into believing she was a royal employee to then hand over the tickets in place of napkins.

In Winter, Adri and Pearl were arrested by Levana and thrown in jail. When Cinder joined them, she revealed to them that she was Princess Selene. Adri realizes that Garan knew of this and told her to take care of Cinder, which she hadn't done. Adri then said that she was certain Cinder didn't save Peony but instead taunted her on her deathbed with the antidote. Enraged, Cinder lifted Adri off the ground, saying she will make her gouge her own eyes out if she tells of her foot's ability to be removed easily. During Adri's trial, Levana asked her if she was present during Cinder's cyborg operation, to which she denies. Levana then asked Aimery Park to mention Garan's device and Adri is cleared of all charges. After the war ended, Cinder presented Adri and Pearl to the world leaders and mentioned Garan's device. Adri was unaware and said the blueprints were all gone. However, Cinder noted that Garan hid another set of blueprints inside Iko. Adri realizes that she and Pearl will be very wealthy and is happy.

Characteristics[]

Physical Attributes[]

Adri was a "middle-aged woman with hair just beginning to gray." She usually wore a silk chrysanthemum embroidered bathrobe when at home, with her skin "shining with too much powder" and her lips painted "horrifically bright." Cinder noted that this made Adri look as though she was preparing to go somewhere, though she rarely left their apartment.

Personality[]

Adri is very stuck-up and merciless to Cinder as she considered her beneath herself. She is righteous about her beliefs and shows no remorse for her actions. She considers herself higher than cyborgs, thinking that they're a disgrace to humans.

She blames all of her misfortune on Cinder; she does not think she has to earn anything on her own, and sees everything Cinder has done for the family as a given.

She is described as being "always so careful not to disturb the neighbors. Not to be noticed. Not to cause a commotion. Not to do anything that could ruin their reputation." Adri cared very much about what others thought of her.

When Cinder manipulated Adri's bioelectricity, hoping to force a confession out of her, Adri remarked that perhaps if her husband hadn't died, she might have eventually accepted and cared for Cinder. However, she finished with "if only she were normal." meaning that even if Garan had survived, there still would have been a high chance that Adri remained judgmental and unkind, as her bias towards cyborgs was too ingrained.

Strengths:[]

  • General Intellect- She was the only one to notice and piece together something that everyone investigating had completely overlooked. She figured out Cinder was the then-unidentified cyborg that caused a ruckus in the quarantines.[1]
    • Attention to Detail
    • Logic & Deduction

Weaknesses:[]

  • Inability to Separate Personal Animosity- She lets her emotion and bias cloud her thinking process, resulting in the conclusions she makes turning out to be incorrect. In which Cinder took Peony's ID chip into possession; the action itself was spot-on, however, Adri's deduction of the reasoning behind the action could not have been farther from the truth. She failed to see that Cinder truly loved Peony as a sister and painted Cinder's actions with far more sinister intentions. This can be attributed to her former husband's passing, which she still blames on sixteen year old Cinder.[1]

Relationships[]

Linh Cinder[]

Cinder was taken in by Adri's husband, however, she was rather reluctant to accept her into the family. Unbeknownst to her, she was the missing Lunar heir, Selene. Due to Cinder/Selene's appearance, Adri constantly mistreated her by ordering her to work for the family as a mechanic. Adri's prejudice for Cinder being a cyborg was very strong as she blamed her Peony's death on Cinder and forced her to enter the cyborg draft for Letumosis research, as she was absolutely negligent towards Cinder's feelings. When Cinder was stealing her and Pearl's tickets, Adri regarded her as a "wicked girl."

Linh Pearl and Linh Peony[]

Being Adri's two daughters, she loves them very much. Adri expressed grief upon hearing that her family was financially struggling. Still, Pearl and Peony supported their mother. Unlike Pearl, Peony was less apathetic towards Cinder and chose to help her out if possible. Pearl seemed more devoted to Adri, sticking by her mother's side and agreeing with Adri's decisions.
